LeBlanc- Mr. Leo E. Pourteau, 95, was born September 14, 1921 and passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings. He was a resident of Reeves and an Army Veteran. He enjoyed horses, playing dominos, and playing basketball. He was a member of Leblanc Pentecostal Church. Mr. Pourteau’s humor will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
Leo graduated from Oakdale High School in 1940, where he started as a forward on their Championship “A” basketball team. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and deployed to the Pacific Theater of War serving with the 40th Infantry Division, 185th Regiment where, as squad leader he distinguished himself by his leadership and skills in instructing men in the use of handling of weapons of war, including rifle, automatic rifle, bayonets, grenades and fighting as a team. Displaying these attibutes he rose rapidly to the rank of Sergeant.
Sgt. Pourteau was Honorably discharged from the US Army February of 1946, returning to civilian life. Leo played Semi-Pro on Cities Service Basketball Squad. A real cowboy and rodeo contestant only quitting, as he said, to keep from starving. He went to work on the drilling rigs until retirement.
Leo won the 25th Annual World Championship Domino Tournament in Andalusia, AL. He had played sports all over the world in basketball, rodeo and other such athletic events.
He is survived by two brothers, Robert “Bobby” Pourteau and his wife Helen, Charles Pourteau and his wife Frances; step-son, Ricky Lawrence; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents, Bob Pourteau and Lydia Gilley Pourteau; siblings Alton M. Pourteau, James “Snookie” Pourteau, and Ruby Pourteau Greer; Roommate and good friend, Eugene Ogle.
Funeral service will be held Monday, September, 11, 2017 at LeBlanc Pentecostal Church at 1PM. Rev. Ricky Treece and Rev. Alfred Gibson will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in LeBlanc Cemetery. Visitation will begin Sunday, September 10, 2017 at Reed Funeral Home of Kinder from 6PM-8PM.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the entire staff of SWLA War Vet Home and thank Darla Price for her special care of Mr. Pourteau. They would also like to thank LAMM Hospice, especially RN Cheryl Trahan and other staff for taking great care of Mr. Pourteau.
