Obituary of Dudley J. Mercer
DUDLEY J. MERCER OBITUARY
Dry Creek- Dudley J. Mercer, 85, of Dry Creek passed from this life into heaven on Saturday, March 18, 2017. A celebration of his life, faith and God’s goodness will be held at Dry Creek Baptist Church with visitation Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 PM and Wednesday morning from 9 to 11 AM. The funeral service is set for 11 AM with burial and military honors to follow at Dry Creek Cemetery. Pastors Charlie Bailey, John Gray and Billy Davis will officiate. Reed Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Dry Creek Baptist Church Building Fund for the construction of a family life center.
Dudley Mercer was preceded in death by his parents, Luther M. And Eula Mercer; stepmother Annie Mercer; sisters Ora Moses, Jackie O’Neal, and Ada Vee Reeves; brothers Darrel Mercer and L.M. Mercer, Jr.
Mr. Mercer often spoke proudly of the blessing of family. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Della Reeves Mercer; two daughters Jean Markway (Jeff) and Judy Davis (Tony); two sons James Mercer (Martha) and John Mercer (Pamela); nine grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; two sisters Iola McCracken and Annie Mae Crow; two brothers Frank Mercer and Jerry Mercer; and numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
After graduating from Dry Creek High School, Mercer joined the United States Air Force where he retired as a Tech Sergeant after proudly serving his country for twenty years. His military stint included service during the Vietnam War in country. Following military retirement he returned to Louisiana and was employed for twelve years by Cities Service Oil Refinery. As a devoted Christian and long-time member of Dry Creek Baptist Church, he faithfully taught Sunday School and served as a deacon.
In later life Mr. Mercer devoted himself to family, numerous church projects, traveling widely and giving a helping hand to every friend or acquaintance who needed him. Dudley Mercer’s influence will be deeply missed.
